Why this exists

This was built in a machine shop, for a machine shop

I took over as CNC programmer and shop lead, and inherited the usual problem: no reliable count of what tooling we held, and no record of why any of it broke. We'd discover a shortage with two cutters left and a two-week lead time, then lose production time running a smaller tool or rewriting toolpaths.

The first fix was a spreadsheet. It worked right up until the floor got busy — then logging became something to do later, and later never came.

The problem was never that operators wouldn't log it. It was that logging cost them a walk to a desktop and a file someone else already had open.

So CutterLog does it the other way round: the log comes to the tool. Scan the label, pick a reason, done — and the questions that actually matter (is it the feeds and speeds? the fixture? the coating? the training?) finally have data behind them.
